Tiramisu is a classic Italian dessert known for its rich and creamy layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and mascarpone cheese. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make tiramisu at home:

**Ingredients for Tiramisu:**

For the coffee mixture:
1. 1 1/2 cups strong brewed coffee, cooled
2. 3 tablespoons coffee liqueur (optional)
3. 2-3 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)
4. 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder (for dusting)

For the mascarpone mixture:
5. 1 1/2 cups mascarpone cheese
6. 1/2 cup granulated sugar
7. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
8. 4 large egg yolks

For assembling:
9. 24-30 ladyfingers (savoiardi)
10. Unsweetened cocoa powder or grated chocolate for dusting
11. A pinch of salt
12. 4 large egg whites
13. Cocoa powder or grated chocolate for garnish
14. Fresh strawberries or mint leaves for garnish (optional)

**Instructions for Tiramisu:**

1. **Prepare the Coffee Mixture:**

– Brew strong coffee and let it cool to room temperature. You can add coffee liqueur to it for extra flavor.
– Mix in sugar until it’s dissolved.

2. **Prepare the Mascarpone Mixture:**
– Whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl until the mixture becomes pale and creamy.
– Add the mascarpone cheese and mix until well combined. Set this mixture aside.

3. **Whip the Egg Whites:**
– In a separate clean bowl, whip the egg whites with a pinch of salt until they form stiff peaks.

4. **Combine Mascarpone and Egg Whites:**
– Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the mascarpone mixture until well incorporated. Be gentle to keep the mixture light and fluffy.

5. **Assemble the Tiramisu:**
– Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture (don’t soak them; just a quick dip) and arrange them in a single layer in the bottom of your serving dish. You may need to break some ladyfingers to fit them in.

6. **Layering:**
– Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers.
– Repeat another layer of dipped ladyfingers and top with the remaining mascarpone mixture.

7. **Chill:**
– Cover the tiramisu and refrigerate it for at least 4 hours or preferably overnight. Chilling allows the flavors to meld and the dessert to set.

8. **Dust with Cocoa Powder:**
– Before serving, dust the top of the tiramisu with unsweetened cocoa powder using a fine sieve or sifter.

9. **Garnish (Optional):**
– You can garnish your tiramisu with grated chocolate, fresh strawberries, or mint leaves for an extra touch.

10. **Serve:**
– Slice and serve your homemade tiramisu cold. Enjoy!

Tiramisu is a delightful dessert, and making it at home allows you to tailor it to your taste. Remember that it’s important to use fresh, high-quality ingredients for the best results.
